GROUND BREAKING NEWS

Barking and Dagenham Council has been awarded £3 million to create new educational facilities for post 16 year olds.

The borough is one of fourteen local authorities awarded funding from the Young People’s Learning Agency (YPLA).

The funding will provide 12 additional classrooms and replace six existing classrooms to accommodate the number of pupils staying on at school. Funding will be used to create high quality teaching accommodation at Robert Clack School.

Work has already started with accommodation ready to be used by the end of March 2012.

Cllr Rocky Gill, said: “We are pleased that the needs of Barking and Dagenham have been recognised and welcome the funding from the YPLA. Every little helps, especially as more young people are staying on at school. We desperately need more school places and the funding to pay for them.

“The increasing demand for school places is probably the biggest issue we face in the borough.

“This funding is welcome but we still need more money from government to tackle this situation.”

Head Teacher Sir Paul Grant, said: “To get this funding is an impressive achievement by the Council in the current economic climate. Particular thanks must go to Cllr Rocky Gill for his tenacious lobbying on behalf of Barking and Dagenham. I would also like to thank local authority officers and key staff in our school"

The timber framed and clad classrooms to the main building added in the 1950’s at Robert Clack Green Lane site which are no longer fit for purpose have now been demolished and removed. These will be replaced by new, well designed classrooms which will accommodate the increase in numbers of sixth form students from the North East Consortium made up of All Saints Catholic School, Eastbrook, Warren and Robert Clack.

"Learner's spiritual, moral and social development is very good. Their characters and personalities develop well in school and their confidence and determination are often very striking. Nevertheless, they remain sensitive and aware and many are becoming politically astute." OfSTED- HMI June 2004
