The managed learning environment     mle

Robert Clack School of Science will launch a Managed Learning Environment during the Spring Term of 2009.

This page will inform users of how the MLE works and its benefits to our students.

What is a MLE?

Managed or Virtual Learning Environments are Open Course Management Systems that universities, colleges, schools and businesses use to add web technology to their courses. The vast majority of universities currently use MLEs

What does a MLE do?

A MLE allows for schools and colleges to create on line courses to add to what pupils and students will learn from their class based lessons.

It will allow users to gain access to lesson resources, external web based pages together with completing on line lessons, tests and assessments. Crucially it will also allow users an opportunity to share information with others and discuss topic specific issues with on line users (for example fellow students and teachers). Finally, as a MLE is truly interactive it will provide us with considerable feedback on the progress that each and every student is making on their course in the form of quizzes, surveys and questionnaires. However it must be noted that a MLE is not, and can never be a replacement for class based teaching. MLE courses are not distant learning courses and full attendance at all class based lessons will continue to be compulsory.  As the MLE is a web based it will be available anytime, anywhere.

The MLE will also provide you with up to date information, email alerts and calendar reminders on any news or events taking place that is relevant to what you study or your year group.

How do I gain access to the MLE?

When your individual subject area is ready to lauch its MLE, you will be given a username (this will be the same as the username you have to access the school network) and a password. The MLE course administrator will then enrol you on to your individual courses. Please note that you will only have access to the courses/subjects that you do and as such the MLE will be personalised to your needs.

Can parents gain access to the MLE?

Yes. The MLE allows for a veriety of access rights from full administrative rights (which will be held by teachers to edit and add activities to the courses) to pupils (who will be given rights to complete on line activities) and to parents and guest access who can enter the MLE as a parent. This will provide parents with valuable access to what their children's classwork and homework.

When will the MLE be operational?

The school is currently working on developing MLE courses at Key Stage 5 focusing on AS Level.

The MLE can be accessed from the links on the left hand side of our webpages (pleae click on the moodle icon)

The curriculum is outstanding and meets the needs of students extremely well. A wide range of vocational courses and work-related opportunities at Key Stage 4 offer helpful pathways into training and employment. Provision for personal, health, social and citizenship education is excellent and supports students' personal development successfully as well as providing exciting opportunities for developing enterprise and work-related skills.
