the best in essex

At the start of June the Essex Schools athletics championship took place in Chelmsford, as ever a large number of Robert Clack pupils were selected to represent the borough of Barking and Dagenham.
Special mention must go to two boys in particular who not only won a gold medal, but smashed their own personal bests and school records in the process.
Matthew Cottrell in year 11, who is also a county Rugby player threw the Javelin over 50 metres and AyoOlukoga in year 9, who is also a county footballer ran the 200 metres in a time of 23 seconds.
Ayo has been selected to go on and represent Essex at the National schools championships later this month.
Year 9 Rugby
In the week before half term the Year 9 boys rugby team took part in the final of the London, Sub Regional Rugby League tournament. We were one of five schools including local sports college and friendly rivals Barking Abbey.
Conditions were poor and the temperature extremely low, but in spite of this our lads managed to stay focussed throughout and perform consistently all afternoon.
It was pleasing to see that the hard work and dedication that these boys put in throughout the year paid off as we swept the opposition aside game after game. We finished the day with a ridiculous record of …played 4, won 4, conceded 0 points and scored 148.
So impressive were our whole squad that Harlequins Rugby League team scouts requested that the whole team attend a talent identification camp later in the summer. Although all were outstanding special praise must go to team captain Teddie Duke who was named player of the tournament.
Well done gents, not only for winning, but playing in the correct manner throughout.

Under 16 Netball
I am pleased to mention that the under 16 squad played amazingly well in the quarter finals of the Essex cup last week. They won 19-17 against Southend High School for Girls and are now through to the semi finals. This is a great achievement as they are now through to the last four schools in the whole of Essex.
The team consists of the following,
Year 10 Year 11
Carla Forbes Audrey Boum-Enock
Rebecca Sobodu Sofyat Kasim
Gabbie Mahal Kirstie Woodgate
Gemma Bailey
Shiann Evans
Chanel Byfield
Jodie Brazier
Mrs Kirby
Lords Cricket Tour
On Friday 3rd March we took 35 boys from the Lower school on a tour of Lord’s Cricket ground, the home of cricket. The children had the opportunity to see the Long Room, the pavilion and the players’ dressing room. The ground is steeped in history and culture. All the boys were a credit to the school during the day, behaving excellently, earning approving comments from tour guides and members of the public alike.

DEPARTMENTAL AIMS
The order for Physical Education in the National Curriculum provides the basis for us to deliver a broad and balanced Physical Education programme, which helps us to fulfil our main aims, which are:
- To promote physical activity, physical development and a healthy lifestyle.
- To develop social co-operation and positive attitudes and to compete with a sense of fair play.
- To promote and develop safe practice in physical activities.
- To provide equal opportunities for all children, regardless of race, gender, background or ability.
- To provide opportunities for all children to achieve their potential.
Work within the Physical Education department is designed to support, contribute and complement the aims of the school by providing equality of access for all pupils to a broad and relevant curriculum. Balance in Key Stage 3 is maintained but with a distinct emphasis in competitive games. The Key Stage 4 programme covers National Curriculum requirements. An opportunity for limited choice is given which is linked with an awareness of the leisure opportunities available in the community. The introduction of the BTEC Sport national award allows learners to develop their interests in sport at KS5
Dance at Robert Clack
Dance is currently taught both at KS3 and KS4.
At KS3 dance is taught to students during their physical education lessons. They learn a range of dance styles including contemporary, Jazz, Jive, Bollywood and street dance, and are introduced to the work of current professional choreographers. Students learn the skills to choreograph perform and appreciate dances and have an opportunity to perform their work at the end of each unit.
At KS4 dance is offered as a BTEC level 2 extended certificate, for students who wish to choose it as one of their options. This qualification runs over two years and is equivalent to 2 GCSE’s grade A-C. Within this qualification students take weekly technique classes in styles such as contemporary, jazz and physical theatre. They have many opportunities to perform their work in various settings as part of their ongoing assessment. Students also have the opportunity to go on theatre trips to watch dance performances and gain insight into the professional world of dance.
Starting in September 2011 dance will also be taught at KS5 as a BTEC level 3 national award. This qualification equivalents to one A level grade A-C. The course is delivered in a practical setting and during the course students will take workshops in a wide variety of dance styles and techniques. Students will work as a company to choreograph dances and perform them in a wide variety of settings as part of their ongoing assessment
