In February 2009, Robert Clack School was awarded a third specialism in Languages effective from 1st April 2009.

Message from Mr Carder, Languages Subject Leader:

Specialist Status

Robert Clack School has been waiting with bated breath recently, to see if the Modern Foreign Languages Department would gain Specialist Status this year. When the news arrived at the beginning of February we all breathed a communal sigh of relief as we discovered our bid had been successful. We are all very proud of this achievement, and look forward to implementing positive, rewarding and successful initiatives, both within the school, with our partner schools and within the local community.

Which Languages?

The department has recently added Spanish to the syllabus to go along with French, and this is already proving very popular. In addition to this, as we get more students who speak English as a second language we aim to ensure they are given the opportunity to develop their native language skills, and to gain a suitable qualification in that language, where possible.

Visits Abroad

The department successfully runs a series of visits to France which are aimed at improving language techniques and developing insights into cultural awareness. Each year we take about 140 Year 7 students on a day- trip to Le Touquet, 30 Year 9 students on a five-day trip to Normandy and forty Year10/11 students on a five-day visit to Paris and The Opal Coast. These visits are a really great way to reinforce the value of learning a foreign language.

French For Adults

How would you like to learn French and show off to your children? Robert Clack is soon to launch its own evening class, aimed at parents and adults in the local community, giving you the opportunity to learn basic conversational and situation-based language skills, we are even hoping to organise a mini-trip to France at the end of the course in order to enable you to practise your skills in real-life situations. Watch this space for details.

Fun Stuff

Apart from a wide range of oral games and activities used in lessons to create a stimulating learning environment, and encourage students to engage with the languages learned, there is also access to:

  •  French magazines and readers, which students really enjoy and which enhance their awareness of grammar.
  • Computer software which enables students to get involved with personalised learning.
  • Visits abroad, which enable students to practise their language skills in real-life situations.
  • Links with French-speaking schools, which encourage students to communicate and “meet” real native speakers.
  • A very stimulating course at all Key Stages, using the excellent,”Expo”  text books.
  • A soon to be organised visit to Arsenal Football Stadium , with the intention of meeting some of their French-speaking players.

This is an outstanding school. Students enter the school with standards that are broadly average; they make outstanding progress to achieve substantially higher than average results in national examinations in Year 9 and at GCSE. The school strives and is ambitious for students' success. Results in Year 9 and GCSE have continued to improve year by year. Students achieve outstandingly because teaching, learning and the curriculum are of a consistently high standard.
