On Thursday 3rd March, our debate group was entered into round 2 of UDL, also known as the Urban Debate League. We took 2 teams: Alpha and Bravo. We travelled to Eastbrook with Mr Crosbie Jones and Miss Aktar.
We had gotten there super early, and took the extra time to pre prepare for our debate. We split into our two teams, and collaborated and shared our notes. There was two motions: one which we know beforehand, and prepared for, and another which we found out on the day.
After all the schools had arrived, we grouped into the hall to listen to an assembly from Mr Akbar, who is an alumni of our school and now works diligently with Debate Mate. There was lots of pizza and cinnamon rolls which is always a bonus!
A team then met our opponents: a school called Barking Abbey. We were proposition, and they were opposition: we fought hard and, unfortunately, lost. This was a setback, but we fought back in our second debate against Hornchurch Academy, and won. B team had similar luck; losing their first debate and winning their second.
Overall, it was an enjoyable experience for everyone, and a chance to learn and develop our debate skills.
